Round construction timber

Round construction timber is produced from tree trunks or trunk sections that have been debranched, debarked or rounded by peeling.

Round construction timber is generally not processed further, but used as posts or stakes — as masts, posts, dolphins, ramming piles, palisades or supports.

Manufacturing of round timber

Round construction timber in Germany must meet specific quality requirements set out in DIN 4074-2 (timber for wooden structural members, criteria for round construction timber).

Direct use of round timber is a traditional form of timber use in construction. Because whole trunks are prone to crack along their full length down to the heart, an extensive drying process is necessary, and adequate carpentry joints must be used. Today round construction timber is kiln-dried and milled precisely to the desired diameter.

The use of round construction timber for these applications is driven both by technical considerations and by its rustic appearance.
