Glued laminated timber (BSH)
Higher strengths, freer shapes and larger dimensions. Using glued laminated timber (BSH) makes it possible — in contrast to solid timber — to achieve higher strengths, freer shapes and larger dimensions, by overcoming the natural dimensional limits of solid wood.
Whereas beam-laminated timber typically has its layers running parallel to the longer side of the cross-section, glued laminated timber usually does the opposite.
Beam-grade sawn timber and beam-laminated timber
Beam-grade sawn timber is used in the industrial production of crack-minimised, dimensionally stable beams. To produce beams, two to five squared sections, planks or boards are bonded parallel to the grain along their broad faces — exploiting raw timber resources effectively.
Beam-laminated timber, made up of two or three layers of solid timber, is also referred to as dual- or trio-beams. To avoid confusion with glued laminated timber, beam-laminated timber should never be called "Leimholz", "Lamellenbalken" or "Lamellenholz".
Beam-laminated timber may only be used in service classes 1 and 2 — at minimum per DIN EN 1995-1-1/NA. A general building authority approval is also required.
