Squared timber (Kantholz)

"Kantholz" covers construction timbers that — through sawing or hewing — present four right-angled edges forming the cross-section. It is used in furniture joinery and in construction: as half-timbering, posts or rafters in building, as backrests, struts or table legs in joinery. Per DIN 4074, squared timber has a minimum thickness of four centimetres, while its cross-section height must not exceed three times the width.

Beams

Although "beam" is the established colloquial term, technically it remains a squared section. The technical name refers above all to the intended use, application type or dimension.

A squared section (beam) measures at least 20 cm on the longer side of its cross-section. Squared sections are very often used to build wooden floors or beam ceilings.
