Solid wood planks or 2-layer boards? A comparison from the manufactory

Solid plank or multi-layer construction — which wooden floor suits your project? Properties, use cases and advice from the Luppa sawmill.

Both floors come from real wood. Optically you’ll hardly tell them apart. The difference lies in the construction and in everyday use.

Solid wood plank — one species, through and through

A solid plank consists of 100 % a single wood species. From the visible surface down to the underside. Typical thickness is 14 or 20 mm. Lengths up to 4000 mm are possible, custom dimensions on request.

Grades: we manufacture solid wood planks in three grades.

2-layer board — premium wood on a stable substrate

The 2-layer board has two wood layers. A real premium-wood wear layer on top, a stable substrate below. Both are cross-bonded.

This has two advantages. The board stays more dimensionally stable through temperature and humidity changes. It is therefore well suited to underfloor heating.

Which one fits your project?

For classical rooms and renovations we recommend the solid plank. It can be sanded down multiple times. It lasts for generations.

For new builds with underfloor heating we recommend the 2-layer board. It stays calmer in length behaviour.

In both cases we’ll advise you personally. Write to us via the contact form or call +49 (0)34361 51577. We’ll discuss species, dimensions and surface treatment.
